ENTREVISTA MIKE PETERS

Mike Peters nació y creció en una zona industrial de los suburbios de Nueva Jersey, EEUU.
Empezó a fotografíar en 1975 estando todavía en el instituto, en 1977 comenzó sus estudios de fotografía en el "Fashion Institute of technology", Nueva York.
Hoy, sigue trabajando como fotógrafo para la plantilla de la universidad de Montclair en nueva jersey, además de trabajar de manera independiente en encargos de arquitectura, retrato y fotografía de producto.


Mike Peters was raised in an industrial working class suburb in New Jersey, USA.
He began taking pictures at 1975 in high school, in 1977 he started studying in the Fashion institute of technology in New York.
Today he still works in photography, as the staff photographer at Montclair University, New Jersey, besides freelancing works about architecture, portrait and product photography.






Pero lo que de verdad llamó mi atención es su fotografía callejera. Armado de una hasselblad 2003 fcw, un 50 f/2.8 y un 110 f/2.0 sus retratos están repletos de detalle y espontaneidad.

But what really caught my attention is his street photography. Carrying a hassy 2003fcw, a 50 f/2.8 and a 110 f/2.0 he portraits subjects with incredible detail and spontaneity.



En el curso de su carrera se ha visto trabajando para Tiffany & Co, The Somerset Messenger-Gazette de Nueva Jersey, el New Jersey Herald incluyendo trabajos esporádicos para el New York Times.

In the path of his career he has found himself working with Tiffany & Co, The Somerset Mesenger-Gazette of New Jersey, the New Jersey Herald and even freelancing for the New York Times.

Hy Mike, thanks for answering our call. In enfoquemanual we are straight shooters so, let´s begin with a simple one ;) .


Cual es tu definición de fotografía?
Para mí, la fotografía es una manera de captar aquello que conecta conmigo a un nivel emocional. Es mi forma de expresar mi experiencia de la pequeña parte del mundo que me toca vivir.

What is your definition of photography?
For me, photography is a way to photograph that which resonates for me on an emotional level. It is how I express my experience of the small part of the world in which I live.



Cuentanos algo sobre tí Mike
Además de la fotografía, llevo casado 26 años, tengo dos hijos en edad universitaria y me gusta montar en mi Moto-Guzzi V11 para divertirme.

Tell us something about you Mike
Aside from photography, I have been married for 26 years, we have two college age sons, and I ride a Moto-Guzzi V11 Sport for fun.

Cuentanos que piensas sobre el enfoque manual?
y el AF?.
Personalmente prefiero el enfoque manual porque me permite centrarme en cualquier parte de mi escena. Con el AF, siempre es una lucha para enfocar y reencuadrar, mientras estás moviendo la cámara para volver al encuadre ideal, has perdido el momento. La hasselblad es solo de enfoque manual por lo que uso una pantalla de enfoque Maxwell que permite un enfoque mas preciso que las Accute-Matte que vienen de serie. Para mi trabajo comercial uso camaras Canon 5D Mk II con una pantalla de enfoque Eg-S en todas ellas para aumentar la precisión del enfoque manual. Solo uso obetivos fijos de la serie L de Canon y son una auténtica maravilla para enfocar manualmente. No suelo usar el enfoque automático con esas cámaras. El enfoque manual, junto con la exposición manual son las herramientas que te permiten tener un control absoluto sobre tu trabajo y el resultado. El proceso entero es responsabilidad del fotógrafo. Si tu trabajo no es bueno, no puedes culpar a tus herramientas, y si es bueno, tienes algo de lo que estar orgulloso.

What are your thoughts about manual focus?
and AF?
I prefer MF as it allows me to focus anywhere on the screen. With AF, it is always a struggle to focus and recompose, you loose the moment as you move the camera around from your focus point to your ideal composition. The Hasselblad of course is only MF, and for it I have installed a custom Maxwell focus screen which pops in and out of focus much better than the Accute-Matte screens made for the camera. In my commercial work I use Canon 5D MkII cameras that have installed in them the Eg-S focus screens to facilitate MF. I use only fast L primes with the Canon and they are a true pleasure to focus manually. I hardly ever use the AF with those cameras.

For me, manual focus, along with manual exposure is all about being in total control of your craft. The entire process is the responsibility of the photographer. If you fail, you have no technology to blame, and if you succeed in making a good photograph, then you have something to be proud of.




Podrías contarnos el proceso que haces con tus negativos?
Uso exclusivamente Fujicolor Pro 800z y revelo los negativos en un laboratorio comercial. Hago hojas de contacto con un scanner epson 1680 y los escaneados finales con un Imacon X1. Trato de capturar el mayor rango tonal del negativo en el primer escaneado. Y de la imagen escaneada solo proceso como lo haria en el cuarto oscuro, ningún truco digital, sobreexponer y subexponer, corrección de color, ajuste tonal y limpiar pequeñas manchas.

Could you elaborate a little about how you process your
negatives?
I shoot only Fujicolor Pro 800z and have it commercially processed. I make contact sheets on an Epson 1680 flatbed scanner, and my final scans on an Imacon X1. I do my best to capture the entire tonal range on the film in the initial scan. And to the scanned image, I only do what I could normally do in a traditional wet darkroom, no digital tricks, just burning, dodging, color correction, tonal adjustments, and spotting.

Digital para trabajo comercial y película para mi trabajo personal.

When digital and when film?
Digital is for clients and film is for my personal work.

Recuerdas la primera vez que te gustó una de tus fotografías?
Le pedí prestada una voigtlander vito a mi tío y la usé para fotografíar el patio trasero de mi casa que tenía una manguera y unos juguetes tirados por ahí, la luz era suave, acababa de llover y el color estaba muy saturado. Me gustó y no se porqué.

Do you remember the first time you liked one of your
pictures?
I had borrowed my uncle's Voigtlander Vito and made a photograph of my back yard that had a hose and toys strewn about, the light was soft as it had just rained and the color was very saturated. I liked it and I didn't know why.

Te gusta hacia donde va la fotografía?
No estoy seguro hacia donde va. La única constante es el cambio. Durante muchos años, estilos y técnicas han ido y venido. Lo único que sé, es que aquello que está de moda en un momento dado, no es lo que estoy interesado en buscar. Llevo haciendo fotos 30 años y la manera en que veo el mundo y la manera en que creo imágenes está definida. Mis influencias fotográficas son de hace mucho y hoy los nuevos fotógrafos buscan influencias en nuevos artistas, así ha sido siempre y así será. Estoy trabajando en un proyecto que abarcará toda mi vida en la fotografía. Para mí es mas importante ser honesto y auténtico con mi trabajo que en perseguir cualquier tendencia que se ponga de moda en un momento dado.

Do you like where photography is going?
I'm not sure where photography is going. The one constant in photography is change. For may years styles and techniques have slipped in and out of fashion. All I do know is that is whatever seems popular at any given moment is usually not what I'm interested in pursuing. I've been shooting for over 30 years now, and the way I see the world and the way I prefer to make images is set. My photographic influences come from long ago, and today, younger photographers are influenced by newer artists and that is just the way it is, and always will be. I'm working on a body of work that will encompass my life in photography. It is more important for me to be authentic and honest with what I do rather than chase whatever trends come along.




A nivel personal, tienes alguna ciudad o lugar favorito para fotografíar?
Si tengo suficiente luz, hay gente y tengo una cámara, ese es mi sitio preferido para fotografiar. Si es cierto que prefiero estar rodeado de gente o en lugares que aparenten ser mas organicos menos artificiosos.También he descubierto que trabajar de forma abierta y directa, (llevo una cámara grande y no trato de ocultar el hecho de que esté haciendo una foto) y sonreir después de hacer la foto, me ayuda a que los sujetos que fotografío no tengan porqué sospechar de mí.

On a purely personal note, do you have a favourite city or
place for a photo-tour, some streets, some styles?
My feeling is that where ever I am, camera in hand, where there are people and sufficient light, is a good place to make photographs. I do find that I prefer to be around people and in or around places that come across as more organic and less contrived. I also find that working in a way that is open and direct, I carry a big camera and do not try to hide that I am making photographs, and to smile after taking a photo, to be a great way to keep people from feeling suspicious about my taking their photograph.



He visto que has tenido la oportunidad de fotografiar a Bruce Gilden de Magnun, dejanos copiar un extracto de lo que cuentas sobre esta foto en flickr.
"salía del metro y le vi de espaldas, un flash en la mano izquierda a unos 60 centímetros de la cara de alguien, se disparó el flash y supe que era él. No le había visto nunca, ni a él ni una foto suya, pero supe quién era solo por su manera de disparar."

I see that you had the opportunity to photograph Bruce Gilden from Magnun, let copy and extract of what you say about it in your Flickr about this picture:
"I came up from the subway and saw the back of him, flash
in left hand about 2 feet from someone´s face, the flash
went off and I knew it was him. I had never seen him, or a
photo of him, just knew who he was by how he was shooting. "



Que piensas de Bruce y su estilo al disparar?
Mi encuentro con Bruce Gilden duró unos 15 minutos, charlamos sobre los cambios que ha visto el negocio de la fotografía. Fue cordial y abierto, como alguien con quién disfrutarías pasando el tiempo. También he visto videos sobre él y conozco bien su trabajo. Creo que su trabajo es únicamente suyo y que es una consecuencia directa de quién es y de dónde viene. Me gusta y respeto su trabajo y la manera en que lo hace, creo que está creando un trabajo que resistirá la prueba del tiempo. De todas formas, yo nunca podría disparar como él.

What do you think of Bruce and his shooting style?
My interaction with Bruce Gilden lasted about 15 minutes, we had a chat about how the photography business has changed so much. He was friendly and open, like someone you would enjoy spending time with. I have also seen a number of videos about him, and know his work quite well. I feel that Bruce's work and style is uniquely his own and that it is a natural outgrowth of where he comes from and who he is. I like and respect what he does and how he does it and believe that he is creating an important body of work that will stand the test of time. However, I could never shoot like Bruce.
