La busco, pero no la encuentro

Me gustaría hablar de mis pensamientos o susurrar algo sobre fotografía a raíz de una conversación, y qué mejor sitio que éste.

I would like to talk about something that´s lurking in the back of my mind. And what a better place than this one.

Llevo unos días lanzándome a la calle a fotografiar, me está encantando, pero es sumamente complicado.

I´ve been going out hunting in the streets the last couple of days, don´t get me wrong, I´m loving it, but it´s extremely hard.









En la fotografía como en todo arte sacrificamos unos elementos para incorporar otros, cuando no puedes juntarlos todos, claro. El caos, la tensión, etc. también forman parte de la interpretación de la imagen, el entorno, y por eso existe distinto tipo de fotografía. Pues ni siquiera a eso le llamo robados, no pretendo que aparezca gente sin más, busco momentos, expresiones y situaciones.

In photography, like almost any form of art, we sacrifice some elements when we can put them all together. Chaos, drama, etc. they are also part of the perceptcion of the image, the context, and that´s why this kind of photography. That´s why i don´t think of them as "stolen", I´m not looking just for people, I´m searching a moment, an expression, a situation.

Últimamente estoy viendo muchos fotógrafos de calle, tremendos, cada vez entiendo más a "los magnum". Pero cuando vemos esas fotos como algo sencillo, como poner la cámara y hacer shot no valoramos ese trabajo, es como un familiar que no sabe de fotografía que te dice que la foto que le has hecho no le gusta porque el fondo se ve borroso y la cámara está estropeada.

I´m looking at a lot of street photographers, really good ones, and i´m begining to get "the magnum´s". But when we see that kind of photography we don´t usually take into account the work it carries behind. It´s like that family member that doesn´t know crap about photography and tells you that a photo is bad because the background is blurry and your camera must be broken....

Seguro que muchos, si leen esto, dirán, "buah, cuando veo fotos de magnum o de esas callejeras las veo de aquí te pillo aquí te mato, eso también lo haría yo si salgo a la calle". En realidad yo llegué a pensar que era "fácil", sólo necesitaba echarle huevos, JA.

I´m pretty sure that many folks reading us will say "meh! I could do that, you just go out to the street and shoot away". I actually thought that it´s kinda easy, I just had to throw more "balls" into the game......ha!

Hacer fotos a nuestros hijos, familiares, no es más que buscar un encuadre bonito, un buen bokeh, que no aparezcan elementos alrededor, etc. evitar el caos para lograr algo armónico. Eso es un retrato, y sólo faltaría no encuadrar bien, o buscar un entorno perfecto, manda gaitas. Llevo mucho tiempo haciendo retratos y también sé que tiene como todo su complejidad y práctica.

Taking pictures to our sons, family members, it´s nothing more than framing right, focus as you should, no distracting elements, steer away from chaos looking for something armonic.

Estoy empezando, principalmente a quitarme el "miedo" (no miedo de que me vean) de fotografiar o experimentar, buscar, caerme y levantarme, que ello, insisto, no significa sacar el careto de alguien y punto. Se busca la belleza, la tristeza,... cada persona tiene algo que puede mostrarnos, algo intenso, pero de ahí tienes que ser tú el que sepa cuándo y cómo. Requiere mucho tiempo, y muchas fotos al cubo de la basura, es inevitable. Pero estoy descubriendo un mundo apasionante dentro de la fotografía.

I´m just starting, mainly to fight my own fears (not fear of being caught taking a picture), the fear to search, experiment, fall, get up again. It´s not about taking somebody´s picture, we must look for beauty, sadness...each and everyone of us has something to show, something intense, but that´s where the job begins, knowing when and how. It takes a lot of time, thousands fo pictures in the recycle bin, it´s unavoidable. But i´m discovering a fantastic underworld in the exciting world of photography.

En mi primera salida me encontré con nervios, y lo único que hacía era disparar para conseguir nitidez en el sujeto, intentar no amputar, buscar una distancia acertada para no coger demasiado entorno y potenciar al sujeto, en fin, cagadas. La segunda no disparaba a diestro y siniestro, buscaba personajes que contaran algo. La tercera, buscaba expresiones, sensaciones... poco a poco.

In my first "tour" i discoverd my self full of anxiety and the only thing that i cared about was about subject sharpness, trying not to amputate any limbs, searching for the right distance so i don´t let the subject "floating", bullshit, to be blunt. The second time, i went looking for characters that told something. The third one i went for expressions, feelings...baby steps.

Es decir, es un proceso de aprendizaje. Ahora hay que buscar mayores sensaciones, situaciones que aporten algo más a la foto, etc. E incluso comienzas a juntar todo lo adquirido y añades aquello que sacrificabas, componiendo una foto que transmite, que es bonita y que cuenta algo, intentas juntar todo.

As almost everything in life, there´s a learning process. Now I have to take on larger challenges, something that adds to my pictures. An you even end up using all those things you sacrificed composing a picture that tells something, that is pretty...you try to pull it all together.

El otro día también me lancé a fotografiar directamente a la gente, de buen rollo, buscando una expresión... pero terminan siendo posados...

The other day I just started taking pictures of people with a more direct approach, trying to be Mr Nice Guy....but they end up being "staged"....



Prefiero naturalidad, pero hay que probar de todo (me arrepiento de no tener un angular manual para la ep1, tiempo al tiempo). Eso sí, aunque a algunos les joda el foco de fondo, la cafetera que distrae, o la pajaritas mal puesta,... DEBE estar así. De lo contrario, sería una jeta, que ya prácticamente lo es.

I personally aim for natural but you have to try almost everything (i´m missing a wide angle for my EP-1, but just give me time). And yes, theres the coffe machine in the back, oddly placed bow tie....but it MUST be like that. If it wasn´t, it would just be a face.....which it practically is....

Seguimos con el kitkat. A mi hija, la sigo haciendo fotos, que es algo que me llena, aunque más para "album familiar", intento que tengan algo. Del mismo modo que a la familia, conocidos...

Let´s go on with the kit-kat. I love taking pictures of my daughter, it´s fullfilling on itself but I want them to "have" something. In the same way that picture my family and friends....



También busco situaciones, historias, y para ello evito mostrar a la gente, cuento algo sutilmente... prueba no superada.

I also search for situations, stories and for that i try to avoid showing people....whisper instead of talking......challenge not achieved.



Sigo probando fotos "bonitas". Sí, pero qué aburridas...

Hay que diferenciar el tipo de fotos y coger de ellas su esencia, como se pueda, aún sacrificando.

You have to draw a line between taking pictures and capture an essence, even if you have to make sacrifices.

Bueno, espero dentro de un tiempo, deduzco que largo, conseguir resultados parecidos como los de Mike Peters. Ese sí puede montar una galería.

I´m hoping to get results sometime, a long time, I figure. Like Mike Peters....that guy rocks!

Se presupone que cualquier fotógrafo profesional de un campo específico saber hacer de todo, y no es así. Los fotógrafos profesionales de naturaleza, de deportes,... la gran mayoría no hacen retratos, no hacen sociales, no hacen macros. Claro que hacen, pero otra cosa es captar la esencia. Es decir, es como si me pongo a hacer fotos de pájaros, coches, seguro que alguna sale bien, o más y seguro que pienso que son cojonudas, pero NO es así. Requiere práctica, técnica, etc como cualquier otro tipo de fotografía. Así que seguro que les hacen fotos a sus niños, pero como si yo hago a los coches en las carreras.

It´s usually consider that any professional photographer knows how to take any kind of photography and that´s not usually the case. A sports shooter, a nature one....most of them don´t take portraits, or don´t shoot events. Well, they do, but it´s not their field of expertise and usually miss the "essence". I´m sure that if I started shooting birds, or cars, someshot is bound to happen that "has it" and that I think are just freaking great, but they´re NOT. It takes practice, tecnique, like any other kind of photography.

La arquitectura es otro ejemplo, parece que si tiras a f22 y un gran angular ya consigues la foto, consigues una foto bonita, pero a f22 no tiran los buenos fotógrafos por los problemas que ellos supone de calidad. Y a menos sale con poca PdC, por lo que no son aceptadas. Necesitan más técnica y truquillos de lo que parece.

Architectural photography is just another example, it seems that f22 and a wide angle is all it takes, but in reality nobody shoots f22 because of difraction so you end up getting something out of focus and that is just not right for an architect (at least some of them). It takes a lot of trickery to photograph a building.

Yo he terminado valorando mucho muchísimo todos los tipos de fotografía, otra cosa es que me guste más o menos. Y no es una obviedad, pues antes no era así para mi.

So I find myself appreciating a lot more every kind of photography, you might like it more or less. It wasn´t so self-evident before.

Mike Peters logra lo que comentaba, evitar sacrificar lo máximo posible el potencial de la fotografía. Él consigue captar emociones, situaciones, expresiones, manteniendo una composición excelente, una exposición cojonuda, encuentra la mejor luz, etc. Y obviamente es lo que pretendemos encontrar a lo largo de los años, pues eso no va de un par de meses con la primera reflex.

Mike Peters achieves what I was telling you about, makes almost no sacrifice for the real potential of his pictures. Gets emotion and expression, frames beautifully, awesome exposure, brilliant light...but it takes time, it just doesn´t happen because you got a reflex.

Aún así, una frase citada por un compañero que creo que también dice mucho; “si no te atreves a disparar, sencillamente no hay foto”. Esa es la pura realidad. Pero claro, no sólo se busca eso, porque entonces no dejará de ser un simple robado, no me llena el haber hecho la foto y echarle huevos, a diferencia de las de Mike con su hasselblad en mano, que esas además de ser naturales están compuestas que te cagas. Es una mezcla perfecta, como también realizan otros tantos fotógrafos, de los cuales hay que admirar por cojones y no creer que es sólo el atreverse, hablo especialmente de Mike por el artículo anterior; su entrevista. Pero hablo de mi, porque lo importante es que cada uno quede satisfecho con lo que hace o quiera hacer.

Buddy of mine quotes this a lot "if you don´t dare to shoot, there´s simply no picture". That´s the bottom line. But you don´t want just that, then is just a snapshot, I´m not sattisfied with just being brave. You want the perfect mix, there are some great photographers getting their mixing going on, not just Mike, I use him because of his interview but I´m also talking about me because the important thing is that you end up sattisfied with anything you do.

Las fotos que hago últimamente me gustan, pero sé que se quedan a medio camino, y hay que ser mucho más exigente si queremos satisfacernos a nosotros mismos con nuestras fotos, no sólo con la calidad técnica, o el manejo de photoshop, o hacerle una foto a quien sea. Porque en el fondo, sabemos que no estamos satisfechos.

Así que, si alguien ha llegado hasta aquí, ya está perdiendo el tiempo. A la calle! A captar esencias con tu máquina, sea cual sea.

I´m kinda starting to like things I do now, but they fall short of what they can be, you have to push yourself harder, in every field, not just image quality or photoshop skills. So if you have reached here, get out!, you are losing time! go get what you see, whatever it is....
