Es algo de lo que nos podemos encontrar en las manos de Diego, una colección y equipo enviable, ideal para disfrutar de la fotografía con cada una de estas piezas robustas y de gran calidad, sacando todo el detalle que la pelicula 120 puede dar y por supuesto, con Enfoque Manual. Pero Diego tambien dispara en digital con su Nikon D200, D50, vamos a preguntarle luego sus opiniones de cada formato.

¿De que modo forma parte la fotografia en tu vida ?

Para mí la fotografía es un acto creativo. Como informático, mi trabajo quizá está demasiado llevado por unos límites muy estrictos, muy "cuadriculados", como se diría que somos los informáticos. Necesito, pues, algo con lo que poder expresar libremente lo que mi instinto me dicta.

Así, la cámara y la fotografía me sirven en general como un relajante ejercicio de mirar al mundo sin prisa, de buscar belleza, de ser capaz de crear algo que puede atraer a los demás.
Mostrar algo que haya sido creado por mí y que lleve, en cierta medida, algo de mi interior.

He pasado por varias etapas: empecé con una réflex digital (Nikon D50) y fotografiaba todo lo fotografiable, con miles de fotos en cada salida. Eso me sirvió para aprender qué puedo esperar de la fotografía desde un punto de vista técnico. Después me interesó la fotografía analógica, primero por su mayor dificultad (enfoque manual, medición, exposición), después por ser capaz de utilizar cámaras que han sido joyas de la historia de la fotografía, como las Rolleiflex, Norita, Hasselblad... Esas cámaras están muy por encima en calidad de cualquiera de las actuales, y a las pruebas de 40 años de funcionamiento me remito...
Finalmente, también me incliné por la fotografía analógica porque me permitía y casi obligaba a pensar más a qué hacer fotos y cómo hacerlas; ser más selectivo, buscar un resultado activamente, más que limitarme a apretar el disparador y mirar la pantalla. Ahora, con un carrete de 120 en 6x6 de 12 fotos, tengo para un buen rato, y mi tasa de fotos que me gustan ha subido mucho con respecto a la etapa digital.

Resumiendo, para mí la fotografía es una herramienta para expresar mi creatividad.


How does photography fit in your life?

To me, photography is a creative process. As an IT guy, my work is often constrained by rules and regulations, thus, I need something that lets me express freely what my instinct tells me.

A camera and the pictures I take with it are a soothing exercise to look at the world in a relaxed way, take time in the search of beauty, being able to craft something that can appeal to others. Show something created by me and that, to some extent, takes a part of me with it.

I´ve been through various stages, I started with a DSLR (nikon D50) and took pictures of almost everything, thousands of shots per "tour". It was a great school to learn what I can expect from photography at a pure technical level. After that i got into chemical photography, first for the greater challenge it represents (manual focus, exposure, framing), and second for the oportunity to shoot with photographic royalty, such as de Rolleiflex, Norita, Hassellblad...Those cameras are beyond anything in the market right now and the fact that 40 years later they still work, speaks for itself...

In short, i took a turn to chemical photography because it forced me to think each and every picture, what to shoot and how to shoot it; being selective, purposely search for a particular result, not to stick with pressing the shutter and look at the screen. Now, a 120 roll gets me through a full "tour", and the number of keepers has gone up from my digital stage.

Photgraphy is a tool to express my creativity.

¿Que piensas del enfoque manual ?
Y del AF ?

Nadie puede igualar el placer de mirar a través de un visor y hacer que lo que quieres enfocar quede nítido de forma manual. Tienes siempre la sensación de estar manejando una compleja maquinaria ancestral.Sí que es verdad que hay ciertos eventos más livianos en donde echo mucho de menos el autoenfoque :) Supongo que el AF es necesario para fotografía en movimiento, deportes, etc. Pero a mí me interesa más la fotografía más o menos estática (macro, bodegones, paisajes, etc.) en donde el AF no es tan necesario.

Tell us your thoughts about Manual and Automatic Focus.

Nothing beats a viewfinder and using your hand to focus. Theres this ancient machinery allure. It´s true that there are more mundane events for which i miss a fast AF :) I guess AF is necessary for action photography, sports, etc. But I´m interested in a more "static" photography (macro, still life, landscape, etc.) where AF is not that important.


¿Como has ido adquiriendo tan increible colección de equipo de formato medio?

Pues básicamente con paciencia y constancia en Ebay... Ha sido mi principal fuente. Cuando algún item venía en un estado malo (casi nunca) intento restaurarlo con mi poca pericia, pero algo he conseguido. Me gustaría tener más tiempo para comprar herramientas para restaurarlas. Son auténticas joyas.

How did you get such an incredible collection of medium format photo gear?

Constance and patience on ebay...That´s my main source. Whenever I saw a damaged iten (almost never) I tried to repair it with my scarce skills, but I managed to get somethings done. I´d like to haver more time, get proper tools and try to bring them to life again. They are real jewels.

Cuentanos un poco sobre tus comienzos en la fotografía

He comentado algo en la primera respuesta. Siempre me había interesado la fotografía para deleitarme mirándola, pero nunca pensé hacer fotos. Mi mujer Emma me regaló por un cumpleaños una Sony compacta con la que me aficioné y me presenté a un concurso regional. Gané un accésit, y con el dinero me compré la Nikon D50 que comentaba antes.

Le tengo mucho cariño a esa cámara porque me sirvió para aprender fotografía en todos los aspectos.

Como he comentado, sin embargo, pronto me empezó a llamar la atención las fotografías perfectas conseguidas con un soporte más complejo de dominar, como era la película, y comencé a interesarme por este tipo de cámaras.
Comencé por las de 35mm (Nikon F90x, FE2), que además me permitían usar casi todas mis lentes Nikon. Después di el salto a formato medio, no sin gran temor, porque en mi vida había visto un carrete de 120 ni sabía siquiera cómo montarlo. No recuerdo exactamente cuál fue mi primera máquina de formato medio, aunque creo que fue una Bronica ETRS de 6x4,5. Increíblemente buena para su precio. A partir de ahí, el coleccionismo casi se convirtió en un hobby, y he ido consiguiendo pequeñas joyas a precios, digamos, razonables, aunque siempre tiene uno la sensación de que tiene muy poco y se ha gastado demasiado... Aunque la fotografía nunca es un tema racional...

Tell us a bit how you started in photogrphy?

I have always loved photography, i love wathcing photography but never thought of taking them. My wife Emma got me a Sony P&S and began shooting. I entered a local contest and got an accesit, with the money I bought the Nikon D50.

I really love that camera because it got me started.

As I said before, the challenges ofered by more intricate cameras and sistems, such as film, and the results achieved got my attention. I began with 35mm film (Nikon F90x, FE2) that allowed me to use all my nikon lenses. I then jumped to medium format, not having even seen, or know how to use a 120 film roll, I was a bit freaked out. I don´t remember exactly what was my first medium format camera but it might very well be the Bronica ETRS 6x4,5. Amazingly good for the price I paid. From then on I took collecting as a hobby and I have been gathering at reasonable prices...........yeah, lets go with reasonable, a really nice collection, although you always have the feeling that you got too little and paid too much... But we now that photography is not a rational act....

¿Cual es tu metodologia a la hora de procesar pelicula de formato medio ?

Voy huyendo siempre del postprocesado. Soy muy purista en ese sentido. No critico a nadie que utilice cualquier programa de edición y retoque de imágenes. Sólo digo que a mí me gusta más el "look" no-procesado.
No revelo mis negativos porque no tengo el conocimiento suficiente, ni el tiempo ni el espacio. Los llevo a revelar y luego los escaneo con un Epson V750 Pro. Es una máquina asombrosa, aunque a veces deja un poco que desear en los oscuros. Después de eso, retoco un poco los niveles, si la foto lo necesita, o el color, si el proceso de escaneado los ha modificado, o si la foto ha quedado oscura (téngase en cuenta que utilizo cámaras que tienen entre 70 y 20 años de media, y a veces las velocidades de obturación están bastante tocadas).
Por lo demás, no retoco más las fotos. No sé exactamente por qué, pero me satisface mucho más hacerme la imagen mental de cómo quedará la foto de forma aproximada en el momento de tomarla.

What process you use with your medium format film?

I´m always running away from post-processing. I´m very strict in that sense. I´m not critizicing anyone that uses any kind of editing software. I´m just fond of the non-processed "look". I don´t develop my film because I don´t have the required sills, nor the time and space it takes. I take the rolls to a profesional lab and some of them I scan with an Epson V750 Pro. It´s an amazing machine, although a bit lacking in shadow resolution sometimes. After that, I just adjust levels, if the shot needs it, sometimes color if the scanning process has altered them. A lot of shots come out underexposed because of the aging shutters (between 70 and 20 years old shutters). I don´t do a lot more than that. I don´t know exactly why but I get more satisfaction trying to visualize a given picture at capture moment.

Danos una breve opinion sobre Digital y Película, tus pensamientos y consideraciones sobre cada formato.

En primer lugar, es innegable que el digital es mucho más práctico. Si eres un profesional que tienes que estar todo el día con la cámara, el digital es lo único que se te puede pasar por la cabeza. En cuanto al analógico, es adecuado si no tienes un volumen de producción de fotos grande. Para uso personal, digamos. En mi caso, veo la fotografía como una producción artística. En este campo, cada uno selecciona el elemento/herramienta que mejor le permite expresar lo que quiere conseguir. En mi caso la película me lo permite mejor. En definitiva, yo los veo como equivalentes. El único pero es que con digital (normalmente, a no ser que te gastes millones) no puedes usar las magníficas cámaras de dos objetivos con visor de cintura, rolleiflexes, hasselblads, noritas, bronicas, etc... Sobre todo las TLR, que son una delicia de usar. En general, me atrae más el formato analógico también por el romanticismo del gesto, del uso de esas cámaras. De poder preservarlas y soñar con quién usó esa cámara 30, 40, 50 años atrás, qué fotos hizo, quién las fabricó, y cuán bien se conservan...

Tell us a bit about Digital and film, thoughts and considerations about each format.

First, digital is a lot more practical. If you are a pro carrying around your camera all day, digital is the way to go. As far as chemical goes, it´s only adequate if you don´t produce in big volume. Personal use, you could say. In my particular case I see photography as an artistic production. In that field, each of us has his own weapon of choice to express whatever you´re trying to achieve. Film, allows me to do just that. The only "but" about digital (unless you spend a couple hundred grand) you can´t use the twin-lens Noritas, Rolleiflexes, Hassellblads and Bronicas.... Almost every TLR is a joy to use. There´s also the romantic gesture in using film photography, and those cameras, wander about their previous owners 30, 40, 50 years before, who put them together and how good they stand the test of time...

¿ Con que tipo de fotografia disfrutas más ?

Me gusta mucho el macro. El hecho de esperar horas a que suceda algo a nivel microscópico me relaja. El mundo mirado a través de una lente macro es totalmente diferente (y sorprendente), y se me pueden pasar horas paseando por praderas o montes. Es lo mejor de la unión de la fotografía y la naturaleza.También me gustan los paisajes y la fotografía urbana nocturna.

What kind of photography you enjoy the most?

I really love macro. There´s something relaxing in the long hours waiting for something to happen in the microscopic world. Seeing the world through a macro lens is something entirely different (and amazing), I can just lose hours and hours wandering through prairies and mountains. It´s the perfect union between nature and photography. I also like landscape and urban night photgraphy.

¿Tienes algun proyecto en mente ?

Pues tengo varios, a medida de que mi tiempo me lo permita. Me gustaría, por ejemplo, iniciarme en la fotografía de gran formato. Compré una Graflex Crown Graphics que sólo he usado una vez con un adaptador de 120, y tengo varias hojas de 4x5 que no he podido ni usar, por falta de tiempo.

También me gustaría escanear todos los negativos que tengo atrasados, y quizá, hacer alguna exposición (si me aceptan, claro :) ).

Quisiera aprender a revelar y a ampliar, pero no tengo ningún círculo cercano que sepa o realmente haga estas actividades, así que no tengo a nadie del que aprender, y poco tiempo para ello.

Y finalmente, me gustaría tener tiempo libre para fotografiar :)

Do you have any upcoming projects?

Well, i got a few, as long as I have time for them. I would love to start in large format. I got a Graflex Crown Graphics that i have only used once with a 120 adapter, I have a few 4x5 sheets that I haven´t been able to use because of time.

I would also like to scan all the negatives in the "to do" pile and maybe setup a show with them ( if someone accepts me, that is :) ).

Another thing in my to do list is learning to develop and process negatives and paper but there´s nobody near me that knows about this stuff and can show me, besides, I don´t have the time.

And finally, I would love to have time to shoot :)
