Empecemos dandole al cesar lo que es suyo. Nada de lo que vais a leer se me ha ocurrido a mí y si no es por foros como dyxum y gente como James Lao, nada de ésto sería posible.

Como muchos otros, yo sabía de la existencia de algo que eran objetivos de enfoque manual, empecé con una zenith 122, y mi padre me dejaba usar de vez en cuando una canon A-1. Pero como suele ocurrir, hay una asociación de ideas (enfoque manual-digital) que no se te ocurre hacer hasta que no te la dicen. Así que piqué el anzuelo y me dispuse a buscar un objetivo en ebay que cumpliera mis requisitos. Y lo encontré

Let´s begin givin the caesar what it´s rightfully his. Nothing of what you see here is my idea, thanks to forums like dyxum and people like James Lao, nothing would be possible.

Like many others, I knew about manual focus lenses, I began with a zenith 122 and my father would let me use his canon A-1. But, as it usually happens, there are some mental connections (AF-digital) that doesn´t come to you until someone shines a light for you. So, I bit the bullet and began my quest in search for an ebay lens that would fit my needs. And I found it.

Mi idea ha sido siempre que algún día tendré una cámara Full Frame (gracias Sony por la A850!)por lo que cuando busco un objetivo siempre lo hago con esa idea en mente, por suerte, todo lo que sea enfoque manual será bastante antiguo y por defecto estarán diseñadas en base al formato 35mm. Lo único que sabía era que buscaba un objetivo de retrato o un tele corto, lo mas luminoso posible.

My idea has always been to end up with a full frame camera (thanks sony for the A850!) so when I´m looking to buy a lens I keep that in mind. Luckily, everything thats manual focus is usually very old so they are designed for full frame coverage by default. The only thing I knew was that I wanted a long portrait or short tele, the fastest available.

Y entonces lo ví, una oferta 100€ mas barata que la siguiente por un 200 f/2.8 de Zeiss.

And then I saw it, a 100€ cheaper offer than the next one for a 200 f/2.8 Zeiss.

Según llegó a casa, era justo lo que imaginaba. Tiene mas años que yo y funciona como un reloj, todas las juntas tienen resistencia pero son progresivas, no hay salto inicial, el anillo de diafragma no tiene holguras y los "clicks!" son secos y metálicos, como debe ser. Después de 30 años.........estos alemanes......mira el estado de conservación de las láminas......

As it arrived it was just what I was looking for. It´s older than me and works like a clock, every joint has resistance but are progressive, there´s no inicial "bump", the f-stop ring has no give and the "clicks!" are dry and metallic, how it should be. After 30 years.......damm with zee germans.......

A la hora de montarlo en la sony, hay dos opciones, un adaptador M42->A-mount normal, permite usar el objetivo y la cámara en manual, nada mas. Y luego está la interesante, James Lao, fabrica un chip y lo monta en un anillo adaptador que permite especificar la lente que se usa y poder usar los modos de prioridad de apertura en la cámara y confirmación de foco usando el punto central, chachikesi, no?

When you´re trying to use this lens on the Sony, you have two options, the standard M42-> A-mount, lets you use the lens in full manual mode, nothing else. Then there´s the cool way, James Lao makes and adapts chips that let´s the camera identify focal range and aperture so you can use A mode in your camera and use the central spot for focus confirmation...not too shabby, huh?

Es un bicho enorme, pesa 1.2 Kg. y no tiene anillo para trípode, la versión pentacon six, siendo el mismo diseño óptico, si lleva un anillo para trípode lo que lo hace mas cómodo y seguro de trabajar pero también es verdad que va mas caro.

It´s huge lens, weighing in 1.2Kg and has no tripod ring, the pentacon six, being the same optical design has one so it should be easier to use, but it goes for a bigger price on ebay.

Y que decir del resultado, es un zeiss, son 200mm y es realmente luminoso. Creo que las fotos hablan por si mismas.

And the results, well, it´s a Zeiss, it´s 200mm, and it´s really fast. I think the pictures speak for themselves.

El uso diario es peculiar, necesitas acostumbrarte al peso y lleva tiempo. Pero lo que hace de éste objetivo una bestia particular es que tiene 270º de giro en el anillo de enfoque. Hay que entrenar el uso rápido del anillo de enfoque al mismo tiempo que lo sujetamos de manera firme. No soy partidario de usar una focal tan larga para fotografíar gente en la calle pero si me gusta para sacar paisaje urbano. El juego entre las grandes avenidas y la focal tan larga permite buscar y encontrar encuadres muy interesantes, sobre todo por la noche.

The everyday use is unique, you need to get used to the weight and that takes time. But what makes this lens a particular beast is the 270º degree turn that the focus ring has. You have to train the quick use of the focus ring at the same time you hold it firmly while following your subject. I´m not a fan of such focal lenghts for street photography but it´s great for urban landscaping. The play between long avenues and the long focal lenght let´s you find very interesting frames, mostly at night.

Al ser tan luminoso y tener tanto radio de giro en el enfoque, ayuda muchísimo tener la capacidad de confirmar el foco, la profundidad de campo es muy fina y el mínimo giro en el anillo significa un salto de distancia importante en la escena por lo que podemos perder el foco rápidamente. Enfocar y reencuadrar se vuelve una constante, lo mismo que el preenfoque (cuando sabe que el sujeto de interés va a pasar por un sitio concreto, enfocas al sitio y esperas que el sujeto pase por dicho punto).

Being so fast and having such a long turn on the focus ring, the DoF is really thin and the slightest touch in the focus ring means a big jump in your scence so it´s easy to loose focus quickly. Focusing and recomposing becomes a constan, so as pre-focus (when you can predict where your subject of interest it´s going to be, focus at that point and wait for it).

Una vez que has superado el proceso de adaptación el objetivo te regala todo lo que lleva dentro. Cuando has enfocado bien, has expuesto de manera correcta y has encontrado un encuadre interesante, el zeiss se encarga de devolverte una imagen nítida, de color vibrante, con caracter. Es una delicia jugar en el revelado con los colores del zeiss, tienes mucho margen para llevarlos hacia donde quieras.

Once you go through the particular boot-camp this lens demands, it then gives you everything it has and then some more. When you have a focused right, expose as you should and find an interesting frame, the Zeiss takes on the job from there and gives you a tack sharp, vibrant, colorful, characteristic image. It´s a joy working with the RAW´s from this lens, the colors have a huge range and you can play with them any way you like.
